11th February 2011 - The Limassol Marathon Cyprus

'On Sunday 20th February 2011 I ran the Limassol Marathon in Limassol, Cyprus in aid of The Dogs Trust. The weather forecast for the event had been changeable to say the least with predictions ranging from hail, rain and wind to blazing sunshine and high humidity and on the day it turned out that we had pretty much everything! Wind and rain at the start and absolutely blazing sun for the majority of the race.

The race was due to start at 9am but at 8.30 we were hit by the most tremendous storm. It had been raining with some very strong winds all night but until then had looked like it was clearing up. The rain was absolutely belting down with winds that threatened to uproot the few tents that we were desperately sheltering in, and looking around at the other runners there were certainly a few worried faces. But, almost as quick as the rain had started, it stopped and the race started on time at 9am. There were also half marathon, 10k and 5k races that started just after the marathon. Although it was a very flat and potentially fast route, the winds made things a lot harder than anticipated with a good 18km running head on into the wind. Obviously there was also the benefit of the wind behind us at times but why is it always that the times with the wind behind are so much shorter than when the wind is hitting you full on?

The route of the marathon took us along the coastal road up towards the marina, then looped back through the old town meaning that we actually passed the finish area 3 times which was great for spectators. The roads had all been closed for the event and the marshalls and police were fantastic all the way. The route was perfectly managed. The people manning the water stations, of all nationalites, were equally efficient and their words of encouragement were certainly welcome (although i'm only guessing they were words of encouragement?!)

All in all it was a very good race. Only 300 people started the full marathon which was, unsurprisingly, won by the Kenyans who took places 1 - 4. I finished 139th in a surprisingly slow 4:34:17, but I offer no excuses. It was a hard, yet thoroughly enjoyable race and my thanks goes out to everyone who helped to make the event the great success that it was. Particular thanks must go to David Wright who somehow managed to remain calm throughout!

See you next year!'
